Info
Around 3015 people died in the terrorist attacks: 2996 victims and 19 terrorists. The total number of victims amounts to: around 2590 dead and 24 missing in and around the WTC towers, 125 dead and 14 who died from their injuries from the attack on the Pentagon, 246 passengers and crew members of the four hijacked air planes. Among them were also ten children and adolescents between two and 18 years old. The majority of the fatalities were American citizens, 68 victims came from 40 different nations. On 16 August 2002, the New York City authorities provisionally announced that a total number of 2,726 had been killed. Not all of the victim's families had requested a death certificate, not all of the proceedings were closed. Some statements made by family members did not correspond to statements from other families or official documents. Deaths occurring during the clean up remain unaccounted. During the following years, it was only possible to identify the remains of around 1,600 victims in New York. It has been estimated, that up to 1,400 people were killed on the WTC floors hit by the planes and the floors above. Around 800 were killed in the north and 600 in the south tower. Around 200 people jumped from the two burning towers. 411 helpers, among them 343 fire fighters, 60 police officers and 8 paramedics, were among the fatalities of the attacks. More than 3200 children lost their parents. The resulting anxiety from the separation has been documented. As long term consequences of the attacks and rescue operations, more casualties among the helpers are expected. The number of people injured on that day was reported by the US media as being over 6000. However, the exact number and severity remains unknown.
